Transforming the landscape to create a multifunctional and biodiverse forest in Zamora

Sustainable management of 535 ha of forest in the Zamora region, gradually reforesting and transforming 317 ha of coniferous plantations into various mixed forests, with broadleaf species of important ecological value, including together with pinus pinaster, pyrenean oak, holm oak, olive, cherry, elm and rowan.

The project will implement advanced biodiversity monitoring and create bird habitats and ponds to support local bird and amphibian populations. In addition, it will support the local economy through the diversification of forest resources and the generation of employment.

Outstanding benefits

**CLIMATE**: Flagship project to transform a forest affected by a fire in 2017 into a diverse and multifunctional forest ecosystem, improving its capacity to remove carbon and its climate resilience. The project plans to reforest up to 317 hectares and plant more than 500,000 trees, capturing more than 200,000 tCO2.

**BIODIVERSITY**: Project to promote species richness with advanced monitoring techniques (bioacoustics, DNA sampling, etc.) and the establishment of a biodiversity plan with actions such as creating habitats dedicated to emblematic birds and amphibians of the region.

**SOCIAL**: Implementation of an ambitious management plan, which includes measures to protect against fires, pests, and soil erosion, as well as new activities that boost the local economy through the support of sustainable value chains and the enhancement of the recreational use of the forest.

Sustainable Development Goals

Contribution to multiple sustainability objectives, with a focus on climate action, improving biodiversity, boosting water balance and supporting territorial development.

The project is based on an ambitious forest management plan to transform a coniferous plantation into a mixed forest of conifers and hardwoods, which is resilient, full of life and generates a positive impact on the region.
