A forest in Soria to reverse erosion processes and create biodiversity refuges

In large areas of Spain, the abandonment of hillside land in unproductive agricultural areas has left bare soils with a high risk of erosion and ecological degradation, which can be corrected with protective reforestation that also contributes to improving the water balance in the region.

This project will involve the transformation of a degraded area of scrubland into a mixed forest of hardwoods and conifers with species of great ecological value: stone pine, hawthorn, almond, Spanish juniper and holm oak.

OUTSTANDING BENEFITS

**CLIMA Y ECOSISTEMAS**: This project envisages the use of species with different root development to retain more soil and improve water retention, while sequestering more than 24.000 tons of carbon. Mixed forests offer a resilient solution to climate change and biodiversity loss.

**BIODIVERSIDAD**: This project is a point of special interest for wildlife, where they can find food, shelter and a breeding area, creating a refuge with an important ecological role and improving connectivity in the territory.

**SOCIAL**: Development of sustainable activities, enrichment of the landscape, and structuring of a territory of high value and affected by depopulation processes. The improvement of the water balance will have positive effects on adjacent agricultural areas.
